100 Things About Me1. I was born in Gouldings, Utah on Jan. 11, 1982.
2. Gouldings is less than 10 miles away from the famous Monument Valley (the landscape scenary for a lot of Westerns and John Wayne movies) which may explain why it is one of my most favorite places on earth.
3. I am the first born child which basically means I am both responsible and mature--and made my brother and sister my slaves until I left the nest for college.
4. I am a Navajo girl who lived my first 18.5 years on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona.
5. Yes, I am full blooded Navajo.
6. No, you cannot touch my hair.
7. And I have never ever lived in a tipi.
8. I have a one-inch scar on the left side of my head near my hairline that I received when I ran into the sharp corner of a door frame as a 3-year old child.
9. I tend to pet my scar with my finger when I'm deep in thought or stressed when taking an exam. I think it's a habit now.
10. I have "rez knees" too. This just means that they are all scarred up from falling down all the time.
11. I wore braces for 2 years. Thank goodness for them because before then, my teeth and bite were a trainwreck.
12. I am convinced that my beloved mutt, Kimi, who died in 2000 is my guardian angel and I can sometimes hear the pitter-patter of paws following me when I run.
13. I was a three-time spelling bee champ at my elementary school in 1990, 1991, and 1992.
14. My first name is really Carmenlita. I hated it as a kid because it was too long to spell.
15. I was born without a middle name but am in the process of adding one to my legal name.
16. It will be Nazbah, which was my maternal grandmother's Navajo name and if I am correct it means "woman who prepares for war".
17. I don't like olives and I never will.
18. I love music. I will spend hours in a record store and waste my money on albums.
19. The longest I have ever stood in a concert crowd was 5 hours. I thought I was going to pass out from thirst.
20. It was in 2005 at the San Diego Street-Scene and I got to see Death Cab for Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, The Flaming Lips, and Pixies.
21. I felt like a giddy, lovesick teen because Chris Carrabba and I locked eyes throughout the DC set--or so I thought. My fiance' was right behind me the whole time. lol
22. I say I am a rez girl yet I cry when my family matriarchs butcher a sheep for family festivities and I can't make a decent batch of Fry Bread.
23. I am in love with Freddie Mercury and Morrissey. They were/are sexy men.
24. I don't like my fingers. They look like stubby vienna sausages.
25. I am 5'10" and throughout school I was always the tallest girl in my class.
26. The only plants I have luck at growing are morning glories. God bless them.
27. My first pet was a cat and her name was Frisky.
28. I currently have three cats: Tyrone, Maude, and Jaime.
29. I am a very tactile person. I cannot pass anything with interesting texture because I just have to touch it and run my fingers across it or squish it between my fingers.
30. I think I was the typical ugly duckling-beautiful swan story as I matured.
31. My favorite fruit is watermelon. I could eat a big one all by myself.
32. My little sister is braver than I when it comes to scary amusement park rides. That makes me feel lame.
33. When I am feeling sad, I like to hole up in my closet. I think this is because it's womb-like.
34. My first car was a 2000 Dodge Neon and I still have her.
35. Friends and acquaintances say I am a talented painter but I feel like I still have a lot to work on.
36. My medium of choice is watercolor.
37. I cannot speak Navajo fluently but I know enough to get by in conversation and I understand it when spoken to me.
38. It makes me feel ashamed when I can't speak to my elders because I know they have tons of valuable knowledge to pass on.
39. I am teaching myself Navajo.
40. I used to be addicted to playing the Sims 2.
41. I met my fiance' in August 2004 but knew he was 'the one' and that I knew I wanted to marry him after knowing him for two weeks.
42. We became officially engaged in October 2005 and I will be a married woman in June 2007.
43. We are total opposites.
44. I don't know why old ladies with poofy white poodle hair who sport the big, black wrap around sunglasses get on my nerves. I hope I never have to wear either when I get old.
45. I have trouble with directions. I always mix up my left and rights.
46. Most people tend to think I have Chinese heritage.
47. When I am out and about and I pass men that I am taller than, I start to feel sorry for them and they lose masculinity points.
48. I graduated from high school ranked 8/196. I know that if I tried harder and didn't lose focus my senior year I could have been valedictorian or salutatorian.
49. I still hold a slight grudge against the two students who were because I know that I was smarter than they were.
50. I graduated from Arizona State University in May with my BS in Conservation Biology and two minors in Art History and American Indian Studies.
51. My professional goal is to become a wildlife biologist and work for the Navajo Nation.
52. I am wide feet for a girl because I spent my childhood running around barefooted all the time.
53. This is why it is hard to shop for strappy shoes.
54. I don't have a set style. One day I'm outdoorsy girl, GAP girl, runner girl, or concert going emo girl.
55. I am currently practicing how to fix my hair into a pompadour because I like rockabilly style and the 1950's.
56. When I was young, I thought the world's best looking man was Jean-Claude Van Damme. haha
57. My first paying job was cleaning tables, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning restrooms, and washing windows at the local Burger King. The worst was cleaning the gum from under the tables.
58. I was wearing turquoise before it became trendy. This is how the Holy People recognize me.
59. I will become an aunt for the first time this coming September and I'm going to spoil that kid rotten.
60. When I saw sorority girls on campus, I secretly wished that they would wipe out and biff it in front of me just because they were so annoying.
61. I used to be obsessed with Angelina Jolie's pregnancy but the world goes on.
62. When I was young, I was deathly afraid of puppets and puppet heads. Now I'm just afraid of snakes and have a fear of falling from high places.
63. The most common expletive I use is: shit.
64. Other times, I usually cry out "Goddammit!" when I have forgotten something or someone cuts me off in traffic.
65. I am a sucker for happy music such as one Rolling Stone critic wrote, "if all your childhood stuffed animals got together and started a band." Check out The Boy Least Likely To--they're rad.
66. I believe my favorite song is "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure.
67. I was a little klepto when I was little. I stole anything from earrings to my friend's Barbie to roller skates. I'm still surprised I got away with it all.
68. I don't steal anymore. I now have morals.
69. And my favorite sexual position is...just kidding.
70. I like cleaning dirt and other debris out of hard to reach crevices with needles.
71. The best smell in the world next to Navajo grandmas is freshly cut grass.
72. One of my childhood ambitions was to become an astronaut until a pessimistic friend told me that I had better be prepared to get blown up in space. Afterwards, I settled for wanting to become a teacher.
73. I think OJ did it and I can't believe the dirtbag is free.
74. I really hate kitty litter duty.
75. I love vibrant colors like yellow and orange...
76. Which is probably why my favorite flowers are tigerlilies.
77. I really hate it when I think of a come-back minutes or hours later and I lose focus on what I was doing at the moment because I become so absorbed in replaying the scenario in my head and pretending I said my comeback line to the person who burned me.
78. I really used to like drinking Sierra Nevada Pale Ales. I quit drinking alcohol altogether on November 9, 2005 and haven't had a drop since.
79. I still miss going to Applebee's and ordering a BudLight Brewtus. :(
80. I hate armadillos. I think they're disgusting creatures.
81. I used to have a great dislike for insects until I became involved as a undergraduate researcher on campus. I've worked with crickets, honeybees, and seed-harvester ants. Now I can't pass by an ant hill without looking for the queens or seeing what type of resources are being foraged.
82. I can't stand girls who get everything paid for by their parents yet say they are independent woman just because they live on their own. Get a life!
83. I prefer one-on-one interactions with people as opposed to be one in a big group.
